Barren Lands Canopy

Design+Build Workshop
2022

*Done with Grey & Ivy Inc.

I spent three amazing weeks in the beautiful Northern Manitoba community of Barren Lands First Nation, working with a group of community members through the design and construction of an outdoor seating and shade structure. The workshop began with an introduction to the design process, including site analysis, sketching, drafting, budgeting, and both physical and digital modeling. To accelerate design iterations, we leaned into digital fabrication, 3D printing, laser cutting, and VR/AR tools. The remote setting challenged us to work resourcefully with locally available materials, and the final structure, shaped by the expertise of local participants, was a testament to collaboration and creativity. It was completed in time to serve as a seating and viewing platform for community elders during Treaty Days.
